Ephesians 1:14

"who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of gods own possession, to the praise of His glory"

The Holy Spirit is given to us as a pledge

  • A pledge given was a physical token of a promise to be kept until the promise is fulfilled
    • The promise is our redemption in Christ
    • Also the promise of His return
    • The pledge is the Holy Spirit to fill us and guide us until either Christ comes or we are called to Heaven

We are God’s possession

      • He has promised to redeem us
      • We belong only to Him

We are the praise of His glory

  • When we live by the Spirit and walk by faith

Ephesians 1:11

"also we have obtained, an inheritance. having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will."

Through Christ we are given a share in His inheritance. We are given a place in the Fathers kingdom.

· Vs 5 says we were adopted,

o We are permanently His, the world no longer has any claim to us

After our adoption we were given an inheritance, we were chosen before the beginning of time to share in the kingdom; it is His purpose and His will.

· He knows all things, He is in all things, He controls all things

o He chose to share His Son, His name , and His kingdom with us

Ephesians 1:10

"with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on earth in Him." Eph 1:10 (NASB)

God gave Christ at exactly the right time, He knew exactly when to send His Son to the world. In doing this He summed up all things from the beginning of time to the end of time. All prophecies, all covenants, all promises fulfilled in one single gift.

Ephesians 1:9

"He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him"
Eph 1:9

Verse 9:

Previously His love and saving grace had been told of, yet unclear; when Christ came this mystery was unveiled. His intention was our salvation, this was Christ’s’ purpose.

  • His will was always there, from before the beginning of time
  • His will was for us to be redeemed from our inevitable sin
  • In Christ His will was finally revealed to all
    • We are able to see and understand His will/intentions for us
  • Christ’s single purpose was to fulfill God’s loving kindness
    • God purposed Christ for this
    • His kind intention was for us to be washed clean in Christ’s blood
    • To redeem us to Him
